Alcazaba Tunnel, Malaga

From the fortress of Hibralfaro, I returned to the historic center by a different route - following the path along the walls connecting Hibralfaro with the Alcazaba, I did not go around the fortress, but went down the terrace stairs to the square to the tunnel passing under it.

The tunnel was built to relieve traffic from the quays and the historic center of the city, it connects the districts of Merced and Malagueta. The tunnel was opened on March 29, 1999, and is 182.75 meters long and 16 meters wide. The roadway includes four lanes of 3 meters wide, flanked by pedestrian paths with railings 1.85 meters wide.

The tunnel opens onto Calle Santa Ana, 50 metres from Merced Square.

Parallel to Santa Ana Street, Calle Munde Nuevo begins, which climbs up the mountainside to the Hibralfaro fortress. I walked along it for a while, and was rewarded with a beautiful view of the walls of the Alcazaba Fortress and the Roman Theater at their foot.
